The Queen of Gems

Filed under: opal — Tags: — admin @ 6:03 am

Which gem is the “queen of gems”? Well, it all depends on who you are talking to.

Many experts will say that it is the pearl that is the queen of gems. This is because the peal isn’t actually a stone, it is found within a living creature — the oyster — and is the only one that typically requires no cutting or polishing. Nowadays, unfortunately, most pearls on the market are cultured pearls – not accidentally discovered treasures.

But the opal is also called the queen of gems. (Some sources say that William Shakespeare bestowed this title, but I haven’t been able to find proof of that. He only mentions opal once, in Twelfth Night, and not in a very complimentary way!

Most often, though, it is the opal that is referred to as the queen of gems.

Jewelry that is out of this world

Tektite pendants are on auciton at jewelry-auctioned.com.

What makes tektites so unusual is that they are caused by the impact of meteorites on the earth’s surface. They aren’t meteorites themselves, but were rather superheated when the meteorite struck, and when cooling turned into glass.

Tektites are found in a strewnfield – an area around a location where a gigantic metorite is known to have struck.

The strewnfields are:

European strewnfield (Nördlinger Ries, Germany, age: 15 million years):
Moldavites (Czech Republic, green)
Australasian strewnfield (no associated crater identified has yet been identified):
Australites (Australia, dark, mostly black)
Indochinites (South East Asia, dark, mostly black)
Chinites (China, black)
North American strewnfield (Chesapeake Bay impact crater, USA, age: 34 million years):
Bediasites (USA, Texas, black)
Georgiaites (USA, Georgia, green)
Ivory Coast strewnfield (Lake Bosumtwi Crater, Ghana, age: 1 million years):
Ivorites (Ivory Coast, black)

Take a look at Tribal Jewelry

Filed under: jewelry — Tags: — admin @ 6:04 am

Tribal jewelry, when it comes to that being auctioned at jewelry-auctioned.com, consists of:

Jewelelry made the traditional way from Nepal, Afgahnistan, Pakistan ,Iran, and India.

Tribal silver differs from sterling silver in that it is a century’s old traditional method passed down from one generation to another. It uses 40% silver combined with local alloys to produce this natural style and is reputed to polish naturally when worn.

When it tarnishes, the color is not green but a natural earthy tones.

These traditional craftsmen also use bronze.

Tribal jewelery is made the traditional way with techniques passed from one generation to the next from the mountainous regions of Nepal to Afghanistan with craftsman making hand made jewelery as their ancestors did, but is now dying art form as not many young people are doing apprenticeship in this ancient craft.
